Decide Whether You Need to Shutdown the Computer in the First Place Perhaps the easiest solution is the most obvious: don’t shut it down. Hibernation mode is a convenient alternative that allows for reduced power consumption, faster shutdowns (into hibernation), and faster startups (from hibernation). When the computer hibernates, all of your current settings and data residing in memory are copied to the hard drive and the computer hibernates. When it wakes up, it reloads this information back into memory and you can resume your past computing session. Consider hibernating your computer Monday through Thursday after work and then doing a full shutdown on Friday in anticipation of the weekend. Disable Shutdown: Clear Virtual Memory (Windows XP Pro only) Your computer uses a paging file for virtual memory. If your computer is set to clear the virtual memory page file, this step could be causing excessively slow shutdown times. This tip is only valid for computers running Windows XP Professional. If you have Windows XP Pro, open the Group Policy Editor and then go to Start > Run and type in: secpol.msc Now, go to Local Properties > Security Options. Look for “Shutdown: Clear virtual memory page file.” Change it to read “Disabled.” Disable Terminal Services Terminal Services such as Remote Assistance, Remote Desktop, and Fast User Switching can affect shutdown times. If you do not use these services, you can safely disable Terminal Services and improve your computer’s shutdown time. Do this by going to Start and entering “services.msc” in the Search bar (Windows Vista) and clicking the Services icon when it appears. If you have Windows XP, go to Start > Run and type: services.msc in the box. Scroll down to Terminal Services and highlight it. Click Stop. Next, change the Startup Type to Disabled. You may need to double-click to do this. Edit the Registry’s WaitToKillServiceTimeout value This is an advanced step that should only be attempted by computer users who understand the risk of registry editing. If you are comfortable with registry editing and willing to take the risk, go to Start > Run and type in: regedit Once the registry editor launches navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControl Now, find the WaitToKillServiceTimeout value in the right pane and double-click it. The current value is most likely set to 2000 which is actually two seconds. You can cut this time in half by changing that value to 1000 which is actually one second. Confirm your choice by clicking OK and then exit out of the editor. By using hibernation periodically, disabling the clearing of virtual memory (in XP Pro), disabling Terminal Services, and editing the WaitToKillServiceTimeout, you should notice an improvement in shutdown times.
